Kateca Graham
NACB DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARDEE
Though I have existed nursing almost a decade ago, I still feel nursing in my bones since the adage says, ‘once a nurse, always a nurse’. My journey in nursing was torturous yet more memorable as I reflect on the broader picture of service to others and my contribution to nursing, health services, and national development.
As I progressed through my tenure in nursing, my motto changed and became more altruistic. My motto for my clients was to provide individualized care while upholding my clients’ dignity as I felt an honor to serve, selflessly. I approached young nurses by encouraging, inspiring and motivating them; also, other members of the healthcare team.
I contributed to health services in substantial ways during my deployment to various Family Islands, I conducted diverse teaching and practical strategies across the life span. At school, I taught students basic First Aid, proper hygiene skills and steps to avoid sexual violence or any form of trauma. I conducted exercise classes for adults and gave health tips during these times. Among the elderly, I personalized their teaching about their diagnosis, medication and treatment with the use of age and educational level appropriate language.
At the national level to contribute to development, I made significant contributions during my participa tion on numerous committees. National committees for social and inequality issues included the nation al blueprint for gender-based violence that resulted in the formation of the Department of Gender based Violence within the Ministry of Social Services; and Suspected Children of Abuse and Neglect (SCAN). I also served on Susan G. Komen for the Cure that focuses on cancer prevention and cure.
In my present position as a retired nurse, I continue to advise individuals and groups about health as I aim to demonstrate a healthy lifestyle by actively reviewing my personal situation.

Gaynell Goffe
EXCELLENCE IN CLINICAL PRACTICE AWARDEE
Matthew 7:12 says, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”. This golden rule for life ensures that compassion and empathy for others can emanate through your delivery of service.
I received an Associates of Nursing degree from the College of the Bahamas in 2008. I spent three months on the Children’s ward in Princess Margaret Hospital and it melted my heart. I felt like there wasn’t enough of me to give each child what they needed. Being in hospital away from family was already a burden for them.
I was then deployed to Sandilands Rehabilitation Center where I am currently stationed in my 14th year of service. I spen several years each on the acute, chronic, geriatric and substance abuse units of the institution. During my tenure, I’ve gained a real appreciation for mental health and its importance to the well-being of my clients and society at large. Dr Brock Chisholm originally stated , “…..without mental health, there can be no true physical health”. The evidence of this can be seen around the world. No one is exempt, however, some are more predisposed than others. It is important that we are aware of and educated about these conditions, as well as empathetic towards the affected people, to reduce the stigma and promote a higher quality of life.
It is amazing to see an individual transition from a state of being unwell , to functioning in a manner that is much improved, or equivalent to their baseline.
In 2016, I was apart of the Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing Diploma program, which strengthened my desire to remain in this field of service. In 2018, I completed the John Maxwell’s Mastering Leadership course, which further developed some of my innate skills. Since then, a few opportunities for management have been presented. However, at this juncture, I receive the most satisfaction from direct patient care.

She is presently employed with the Public Hospital Authority (PHA), deployed on Post Natal Unit of the Maternity Ward, Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH).
As Nurse Strachan is aware of the fact that the noble profession of Nursing is ever evolving, she is currently completing her final semester for her Bachelor Of Science Degree in Nursing at Edinburg Napier University. Thereafter, she intends to continue her studies to obtain a Master’s Degree in Nursing Administration. Over the past several years, Nurse Strachan has achieved several certificates in Management from the University of the West Indies as well as technical certifications. Additionally, she is a recent graduate of the PHA’s Management Course 2.0, in November 2022.
As change is constant and inevitable, as a part of the Management 2.0 course, Ms. Strachan embarked on an improvement initiative in the work environment. As quality and holistic patient care is of utmost importance, she conducted a pilot study on The Effectiveness of the General Nursing Care Plans Usage in the Maternity Area, versus a Nursing Care Plan that is specific to the Obstetric patient. The results were astounding as the staff felt there would be greater compliance in the use of an Obstetric specific care plan.
Nurse Strachan asserts that because Nursing is her passion, it is important that she should play an active role in the advancement of her career. Hence, she serves as a member of the Strategic Planning Committee for Nursing and Midwifery in The Bahamas. She has been a member of the Nurses’ Month Committee at PMH for the past three (3) years, as well as a member of the educational, breastfeeding and bereavement committee in the Maternity Unit. Nurse Strachan is also an active member of the Midwives Association of the Bahamas, a member of the Nurses’ Association of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas and a graduate of the Emerging Leaders program 2021-2022. Presently, she is also a member of the Achievers of Excellence, Toastmasters Club.
As Phillipians 4:13 states: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Having been raised in the Anglican faith, this is a scripture that Nurse Strachan puts into practice in her daily life. Presently, Nurse Strachan is an active member of Rhema Family Development Center where she serves in the Youth Department and Women’s Ministry.
As a mantra, Nurse Strachan strongly believes in taking care of oneself in order to take care of others. Therefore, her hobbies includes reading, traveling, snorkeling, scuba diving and most importantly, spending that “me” time at the spa where she enjoys being pampered.
